Somalia's Puntland on high alert following Al-Shabab threats

Radio Gaalkacyo

The security Minister of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland Abdullahi Said Samatar has ordered hotels and house owners to register their tenants as the region raises concerns over Al-Shabab threat to attack them.

The Minister has said this statement at a news conference he held in Boosaaso town [The provincial town of Bari region]. He said that Puntland police has launched massive security operations in its territory to avoid people who are planning to execute instability in the region. He ordered the house and hotel owners to register any one who rents it and to hand over to the police day after day to make sure that people coming from southern and central regions of Somalia are not linked with any violence. Abdullahi Said Samatar has called on residents of Puntland to be vigilant from attacks that may be carried out by Al-Shabab Islamic Movement, adding that his administration will guarantee the security of its people.

The move comes after a senior Al-Shabab official Fu'ad Shongole announced that his groups plans to carry out operations in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland and Somaliland while addressing to hundreds of people at Abu Hureyra Mosque in Mogadishu.

Residents in Puntland have expressed their concerns over Al-Shabab plans.

The group has previously launched suicide explosions in Boosaaso and Gaalkacyo towns last year causing people to panic. Puntland leader Abdirahman Muhammad Faroole has recently mobilized his especial military forces in preparation for any attacks from the Insurgents.
