The first birthday of Soraya Woods, a Somali-Canadian born in Toronto, Canada
was an extraordinary one that carried a special message. Instead of a
traditional birthday party where the child is showered with presents the family
decided to raise funds for the Somali Children who have been affected by famine
and drought in Somalia. Soraya’s parents Jason Woods and Fariida Nur collected
$320 from the friends and family members that attended the birthday party and
presented the cheque to the Human Concern International, a Canadian non-profit
organization dedicated to help alleviate human suffering in Somalia through
sustainable development projects and emergency relief assistance programs.
This family, who has been on the forefront of the fundraising campaign all
along, found yet another unique way to increase its contributions to ease the
suffering of the Somali children. Soraya became the youngest donor to contribute
to the fundraising campaign.
‘It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children the kindness of
helping others who are less fortunate. By teaching our daughter such invaluable
lesson at an early age, we hope that she grows up to be a productive leader who
contributes to the society.’ said Soraya’s father.
The situation in Somalia for thousands of people is still very dire and we
should not rest and relax until all internal displaced people go back to their
local communities and resume their lives. Human Concern International has been
assisting many projects in Somalia in the last two decades and is dedicated to
continue its effort to improve the lives of those in need. However Human Concern
International cannot exist without the support and generosity of people like the
Woods family.
